American College of Emergency Physicians Awards Geriatric ER Accreditation

Anaheim, Calif. – (November 4, 2025) – West Anaheim Medical Center takes senior emergency care to the next level by announcing today that the hospital earned accreditation as a Geriatric Emergency Department (GEDA) by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). This accreditation recognizes that West Anaheim is focused on the highest standards of care for older adults.

“The GEDA program is the culmination of years of progress in emergency care of older adults,” said Sandy Schneider, MD, of ACEP. She explained, “In 2014, ACEP along with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, Emergency Nurses Association, and American Geriatrics Society, developed and released geriatric ED guidelines, recommending measures ranging from adding geriatric-friendly equipment to specialized staff, to more routine screenings for delirium, dementia, and fall risk, among other vulnerabilities.”

West Anaheim is a member of Prime Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading health systems with 51 hospitals and more than 360 outpatient locations in 14 states. Twenty-nine Prime hospitals are currently accredited as Geriatric Emergency Departments by the ACEP.

The GEDA program, developed by ACEP, includes three levels of accreditation that guide emergency departments in best practices for geriatric care. To achieve accreditation, hospitals must adopt more than two dozen standards — from providing interdisciplinary geriatric education to ensuring geriatric-appropriate equipment and screening protocols are in place.

“Achieving Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation is a proud milestone that underscores West Anaheim Medical Center’s unwavering dedication to excellence in senior care,” said Ayman Mousa, Chief Executive Officer of West Anaheim Medical Center. “Our team’s commitment to providing safe, responsive, and compassionate emergency care for older adults reflects the very heart of our mission. This national accreditation reaffirms our continued investment in high-quality services that safeguard the dignity, comfort, and well-being of every patient we serve.”

In addition to its GEDA, West Anaheim Medical Center was recently recognized by Healthgrades among the Top 10% in the nation for Gastrointestinal Surgery and as a Five-Star recipient in several clinical areas. Earlier this year, the hospital also earned an “A” from the Lown Institute Hospitals Index for excellence in patient safety, health equity, community benefit, and clinical outcomes. West Anaheim Medical Center remains a trusted source of healthcare for Orange County, delivering nationally recognized, high-quality, and compassionate care to its community.
